My mini battle with toddler mealtimes

Lately we have been experiencing issues with Little Mans mealtimes and eating.
He has never been a big eater, even as a baby but now hes that bit older and more assertive, we're struggling to keep his nutrition up. Ive heard other parents worry about this so I know its normal for a child his age, even my mum said my brother and I went through a difficult eating stage but it doesnt stop me from worrying anyway!

He used to love breakfast and would sometimes eat 3 to 4 weetbix or a couple of weetbix and toast. Lunch has always been hit and miss but he would normally eat a decent enough dinner or he would have enough smaller snacks in the arvo that I wouldnt worry too much.

The frustrating thing is at childcare he eats a good 4-5 meals a day! This in itself is some sort of saviour knowing hes getting at least 2 days of decent nutrition but I dont understand why he eats like a horse at care but not at home. Im not sure whether its because all the other kids are eating so he is encouraged to eat with them?

I decided we needed to change, our routine wasnt working and after discussion with Husby we thought we'd try something different.

So before his basic routine was:

7am - Milk when he wakes up. Sometimes he would have 3 cups full.

8-9am Offer breakfast. usually toast, crumpets, cereal, yoghurt, pancakes...whatever he feels like on the day.

before 11-12 (naptime) we would offer a snack or lunch depending on whether he ate a good breakfast or none at all. Most of the time he wouldnt really have anything decent especially if he did happen to eat something for breakfast. He could then sometimes sleep until  3pm and not be hungry straight away which would mean he wouldnt really get a lunch (if he didnt eat before his nap) or he ate too close to dinner time which then hinders dinnertime eating.

5:30-6pm - we all sit down for dinner. Again, depending on the day he may eat ok or not be hungry at all. We still offer him what we're having or a slight variation and we dont offer alternatives. I figure if he was hungry he would eat or attempt to eat what was there.

Some changes we made are:

1. In the morning instead of bowing to LM needs of more milk, he has 1 cup of milk and thats it. I think all that milk was filling him up and therefore wasnt hungry for breakfast in an hour or so time. I dont know why we didnt think or do this sooner but so far it seems to have helped a lot. He may whinge to start with but gets over it pretty quickly. Hes since been having a decent brekky.

2. Try and extend his naptime out to at least 12pm by keeping him super busy in the morning. This works well for me on the weekend anyway cos I like to get all my errands out the way in the morning and be back home for his nap in the arvo. This way we can offer lunch around 1130 meaning he goes to sleep with a full belly and this meal is out of the way. Sometimes it doesnt work out and he gets sleepy earlier missing that lunchtime window.

3. Try not to offer any snacks or meals after 4pm before dinner. This has been helping come dinnertime as he's more likely to eat or attempt to eat something because he's more likely to be hungry.

Now this may all sound like basic stuff, commonsense really but sometimes you cant really see where youre going wrong especially if your new to this mothering business. Parenting is all a bit of trial and error and no child is the same.
I did read a good line the other day that said children need to feel hungry. Too many of us nowadays think we should keep feeding their bellies. Why do we need to pack a lunchbox full of snacks to head down to the shops. Im a little bit guilty of this but when I think back to my  childhood, my mother never did that. We would have to wait until we got home to eat or even drink. She never even packed a drink bottle for us!.  Funny how this parenting gig evolves!

Do you have any tips and tricks for funny eaters? Been in a similar situation? Tell me your story. Make me feel better!

A letter to you on the eve of your second birthday

Today is the last day you are 1. Although that seems weird to say since we always refer to your age in months still. Tomorrow you will be 24months old. A big 2 year old!

This time 2 years ago I was wondering when we would get to meet you, when you were going to make that break for it and exit the cacoon of my womb. It seemed at the time that you would NEVER come out. Every mother who goes past their EDD thinks that though. You were 8 days over but worth the wait. Weighing in on the heavier side at 9lb 2oz, I was blessed with a healthy bubba.

Since the day you were born, you have always been alert, tuned into the world and surprising us with your milestones. Your Mamma says you're an 'old soul'. You just had that look about you, the look in your eyes full of wonder.

You developed in leaps and bounds except for your weight which plateaued from about 2 to 5months where you really stayed around the 5-6kg mark. At the time I wasnt too worried as you never complained about being hungry although now when i look back and have since got to know your personality better, its just not in your nature to complain about being hiungry. You're just not a very big eater.

I wasnt really good at keeping records of your firsts but I do know you smiled at 4wks, crawled at 8mths first teeth (plural!) appeared at 8mths and walked at 13mths.

1st bday party
Unfortunately your mummy had to make a tough decision to return to work when you were just shy of 7mths. I suffered from the mummy guilts about sending you to daycare initially  for 3 days and your daddy was to look after you the other 2 but you seemed to love it. The carers are really nice and made the transition nice and easy. You smiled every time we went there and never cried. (although you went through a period a few months ago where you would cry when I left).

You're such a social little boy. You have chats with our friends, you put on the charm with the checkout ladies, you love your grandparents and Uncle. We couldn't ask for a more happy little soul.

15mths
Lately you have been testing us with some tantrum filled episodes when life doesn't go your way. But that's all part and parcel of growing up and it makes those moments where you're the sweet little boy, even the more sweeter.

We love you so much Little Man. Definitely the best 2 years of Mummy and Daddies lives!

Cheers to you on your birthday!

2nd birthday Party Prep- Deciding on a Theme

Our Little Man is turning 2 in a couple of weeks so its time to start planning a small party.

This year we're just going low key and just inviting immediate family and our close friends, most of whom have children who our little guy has grown up around.

I like need to have a theme which I find helps when planning, even if its based around a colour of two. Ive been thinking of what to do for awhile now especially since LM being that bit older, knows what he likes and doesnt like.
My intital thought was a transport theme especially along the lines of buses since he STILL goes on and on about them but trying to find nice invites on a budget was proving difficult.
Then on our latest shopping trip, LM saw these Thomas ones and he got very excited. The decision was made!

However I didnt want to stick to just a Thomas theme since LM loves so many different things.
Then I saw this Dinosaur pack for $5 and I decided then and there to just loosely base the theme around 'Everything that LM Loves'. His favourites. Right now. It will be a great reflection on years to come to see what was on his popularity list.

So there could be dinosaurs, Thomas, buses, trains, cars, musical instruments, and balloons.

This way I can also use some of his toys as props and decoration.

We decided to be brave and host the party at a park hoping Mother Nature plays nice and we have a sunny winters day like she did for us last year.
Only just over a week to go and this is all I have! Better get some list writing happening!

A boy and his trainset

I mentioned the other day how I grabbed this bargain trainset from Target. I bought it for great intentions to give to him on his birthday in a couple of months but Husby had different ideas. And I gave in. Well, just because it was SUCH a good deal, I didn't think it would hurt to give to him now :-S !! Spoilt much!

He didn't take to it too well at first but later in the arvo the pictures tell a different story. However, you will notice that most of the time its his cars going round the track! He was loving it!
I had to show you some snippets of his hour of fun! I love how he can just occupy himself now and its so fun watching him use his imagination!

A winter arvo walk

We are lucky to have a lovely bike/walking trail right at the end of our street. One way it ends up taking you to McLaren Vale-wine country. We didnt go that far but thought i'd share some images of our adventure.

You're 23 months

I cant believe you're almost 2!

:: You're speech is coming along. Something new every day. You are starting to put a couple of words together now and you understand so much. I love our conversations and listening to you talk to others.

:: You can easily count to 10 out loud and we can make out the ABC song even though not all the letters are clear. The tune definitely is.Along with Intsy Wintsy and Baabaa Black Sheep.

:: Still with the transport. You still point out every single bus. Even managing to find them before I do.

:: Your eyesight is impeccable. I love the way you view the world. You take everything in. Stuff which us adults just take for granted. I love learning with you.

:: You have now given your beloved Seahorse a name-Seesaw. Love.

:: You make every word sound so cute. Sushi, Taco, Seesaw, snuggles, the list goes on. Daddy and I make you repeat so many things just to hear your cuteness!

:: You're bed is filling up with all your favourites. Some are regular characters like Yoshi, Monkey, Hoot, port car and Seesaw but sometimes you sneak in an extra car or train, Brown bear book and one day even your new massive bus to bed!

:: You now call my brother , your uncle, Matty. Again said with delightful cuteness.

:: Unfortunately you have caught your first cold. And im sure its one of many again this winter. lets hope your immune system is slightly better than last year.

:: You mostly love food. Still struggle with the veggie side but we continue to try. Some days are much better than others but hey, youre not starving so that the main thing!

:: We see slight glimpses of tantrums but we certainly cant complain. And its usually because your tired or just having a grumpy day. But because youre generally so good, I panic at the sign of one thinking you've turned into a monster! But then you calm down and snuggle up for cuddles and I feel like I won that battle...for now.

:: You LOVE watching videos of yourself on Mummies phone. 'Photos' 'Photos' you say. Youre quite Iphone savvy now. My little tech baby!

:: Oh and you dont mind watching DVD over and over and over and over again. The latest craze is Justine Clarks DVD with the 'Dinesaur' song. You LOVE dinosaurs too :) Such a boy.

We love you to the moon and back Little Man. We are always so, so grateful to have you in our lives.

Today- The Day I was Pining

Today was one of those days where I was pining for time with my son. I think because on the weekend we were so busy with organising and building our shed, I didnt get to spend much good, quality time with him. And I miss him so much today.

Sparked by IG, I saw photos of other mums tending to appointments, school runs, shopping dates and hanging with their babies and I was really feeling sorry for myself.

As some of you may know, Ive worked full time since Little Man was 7mths old and normally it doesnt bother me too much. I mean, of course Id love to be at home with him but I do like my work and I know hes having a great time hanging with Daddy, my mum or his mates at child care. And I especially love the moment when we get reunited again at the end of the day.

Today I just wanted to be 'Homemaker Mummy'. Waking up to his smiley face, getting his milk and having those morning snuggles. Feeding him brekky whilst I enjoy my morning coffee. Chinking our drinks when he cheekily says 'Cheers'! Letting him loose outside, whilst co-ordinating hanging out a load/s of washing, going for a walk to the playground, reading books, pottering around whilst he naps, getting dinner ready and doing some baking.

Im not trying to make it sound being a SAHM is the easiest gig around. I know I probably have it easy some days being at work but somedays you just wish more than others, to be at home with your kids. My ultimate work/life balance would be a PT worker then I could kinda have my cake and eat it too :)

Anyway, back to the grind again tomorrow. Maybe time to book some more holidays!!

21 months today

You are just the most socialable, loveable chatterbox around! My word you can talk! Well toddler babble. We all wish we could understand what youre saying because it sounds so important and interesting but we just nod and pretend we know and try and make out words amongst the sounds.

This week you reached a new milestone in your life. You've been moved up into the toddler room at child care. Its a sad day as we both love your baby room educators and even though theyre right next door, its just not the same. They will equally miss you just as much as well. Luckily the girl-Emma- in the toddler room is equally as awesome and im sure we'll (well me moreso) adapt quite quickly.

We're teaching you more about ABC's. We sing the song and you now know the tune and in your own way, sing along with us. Its cute to hear! Also learning to count to 10. The other day you astounded me by pointing to the no.2 and saying TWO! At first I was so taken aback but then so proud. I think you also know 5 and 6. But its really hard to say if its coincidence or reality.

As most boys, you love all modes of transport. Still loving and exclaiming TRUCK, BUS and CAR and now BIKE and PLANE. Our driving around means we point out every BUS and TRUCK that drives past. Some are even noticed before I do.
Daddy also bought you a little Helicoptor which you call 'Copter.

Youre love for music continues whether its dancing to or playing on, youre right on it! You love the Wiggles and some songs are becoming quite familiar around here. You can even do some of the actions. Again, so cute!

You love my Iphone, to the point I have to cut back on when you play with it. You dont actually play with it on youre own, I still have to help but I downloaded a new animal sounds app which you love. You surprisingly picked out more animals than I thought. I totally underestimate how much you know and learn and Mummy couldnt be prouder.

Ok, sorry for TMI but you are letting us know about your 'toileting issues'. You tell us when you have done poos, even though it simply means wees. You cant quite differentiate between the 2 'jobs'! But still so clever

Hoot has made it to bedtime status. He has joined Mr Seahorse as your bedtime buddy.

There is a reoccuring list of words in these posts: Love, Cute, Proud because that just sums up our relationship with you. My heart continues to burst with pride to the point I dont know how it can anymore.

Love you Little Man. Heres to another month of growing and learning with you.

We're going to the Zoo, Zoo, Zoo....

Yesterday we took a family trip to the Adelaide Zoo with a bunch of friends and their kiddos.

I hadnt been to the Zoo for ages so I was secretly a little excited to go but I wasnt sure how Ace would go, whether he would be interested at his age but he LOVED it. Im not sure what he loved more: the real life animals, playing with the kids or exploring the wide open spaces and secret little paths.

Im a little annoyed that I only managed to get a few shots with the SLR before the battery died. Of course! So some are taken with Iphone. Nonetheless, still good memories.

Aren't Meercats the cutest of creatures?!

In awe of real life Giraffes!

Felt sorry for the poor lions in these concrete jungle enclosures.

Meanwhile the Pandas we have on loan from China get this multi million dollar temperature controlled enclosure complete with a massive outdoor area.
Silly Adelaide Zoo!

But this little guy had fun, it was a great family day out. Then he crashed as soon as the car was moving! Bless xx
